The nearly eight-year search for Robert William Lambert has come to a tragic conclusion after the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) confirmed that human remains discovered on a rural property have been positively identified as those of the missing Montague Township man.

Robert Lambert was 75 years old when he disappeared from his home in July 2018 in Montague Township, near Smiths Falls, Ontario. Although he was last seen that summer, he was not officially reported missing until November 30, 2018, prompting an extensive investigation. Authorities noted that Lambert was living with dementia, required daily medication, and had limited mobility, circumstances that heightened concerns for his safety.

Over the years, investigators pursued numerous leads, carried out extensive search efforts, and repeatedly appealed to the public for assistance. In 2025, the OPP announced a reward of $50,000 for information that could help solve the case and provide answers to Lambert’s family. His disappearance remained one of Ontario’s most closely followed unresolved missing person investigations.

Police have now confirmed that Lambert’s remains were found on a rural property where investigators had previously recovered the remains of another missing individual during a separate investigation. The discovery has brought long-awaited answers to his loved ones after years of uncertainty. However, authorities emphasized that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death remains active, and no conclusions have been reached regarding how he died. No charges have been filed in connection with Lambert’s death.

Detectives continue to examine evidence recovered from the property as they work to determine what happened after Lambert disappeared. Although arrests have been made in connection with another homicide investigation associated with the same location, police have stated that they have not established a direct link between those cases and Lambert’s death.

The identification of Robert Lambert’s remains brings a measure of closure to a case that deeply affected the communities of Smiths Falls and Montague Township. Family members, friends, neighbors, and countless members of the public who followed the investigation have expressed their condolences while remembering the years of uncertainty his loved ones endured.

While the missing person investigation has officially concluded, authorities continue to seek information that may help clarify the events leading to Lambert’s disappearance and death. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the Ontario Provincial Police as investigators continue their work.
